This study investigated whether sediments Lyngbya majuscula blooms form in sediments, eventually covering bay bottom habitats such as oyster reefs and seagrasses.

Leptolyngbya terebrans. Lyngbya aestuarii.
Lyngbya majuscula, commonly termed “mermaids hair” or “fireweed,” is an unbranched filamentous cyanobacterium that is often found in coastal tropical and subtropical marine and estuarine environments worldwide. Lyngbya majuscula is a toxic blue-green alga (= cyanobacteria) found throughout Moreton Bay. It is sometimes called fireweed because human contact can result in rashes and other skin complaints. This type of alga has likely always been in Moreton Bay but over the past few decades it has expanded in scale and in some years, reaches bloom proportions. Marine strains of the genus Lyngbya are some of the most prolific producers of natural products.
